Description
Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide, a chain of seven amino acids, with the sequence Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro. It was first described in the late 1990s. Structurally, Selank is based on tuftsin, a naturally occurring tetrapeptide that is a fragment of the heavy chain of immunoglobulin G (IgG). The design extended tuftsin by adding a Pro-Gly-Pro tripeptide tail, the same stabilizing extension used in Semax, to slow enzymatic degradation.
Selank and Semax were developed by the same Russian research group and share a structural design principle, though they’re studied for different effects. While Semax is investigated primarily for cognitive and neuroprotective research, Selank is studied mainly as an anxiolytic, working through modulation of GABAergic transmission, enkephalinase inhibition, and changes in BDNF expression similar to those reported for Semax. Selank is approved in Russia as a prescription anxiolytic, and Russian research has reported reduced anxiety-like behavior in animal models without the sedative or cognitive-impairing effects associated with benzodiazepine-class drugs.
